Hormones after 35

Personal essay

I Didn't Lose My Health At 44. I Lost My Evenings, My Patience, And Three Friendships.

Everyone talks about the symptoms. Nobody warns you what the symptoms do to your marriage, your job, your friendships, or the way you behave at 11pm. Here is what happened to mine, and what finally explained it.

The Friday I cancelled on my sister was the third time that year.

I said I was tired. I was. I also didn't want to be in photos.

I was 44. Nothing in my life changed. Everything in my body did — weight I couldn't explain, wide awake at 3am, snapping at my husband over a dishwasher.

My doctor ran bloodwork. "Normal," she said. Normal meant nothing to fix. Which meant this was just me now.

It wasn't. It took two more years to find out why.

32

PCOS diagnosed. Told to lose weight. Nobody said "insulin."

43

Perimenopause started. I didn't know that word yet.

44

Weight gain, 3am waking, "normal" bloodwork, $600 spent guessing.

45

Stopped dieting. Started writing it down. 6 weeks later, the pattern showed up.

46

Sleeping through most nights. 22 lbs down. Back at my sister's table.

What this actually costs you

Hot flashes. Irregular cycles. Belly fat. Tidy words for something that isn't tidy at all.

It shows up in your marriage. Your kitchen at 11pm. Your friendships. And it never announces itself as hormonal — it just looks like you getting worse as a person.

Your house learns to walk around you

You snap over nothing. Apologise. Do it again Thursday.

Slowly, your family adjusts — checking your mood before they ask you anything. Not because you're difficult. Because you've become unpredictable, and nobody has an explanation.

7 in 10 UK women say perimenopause played a part in their marriage breaking down. Nobody told them that at 43.

Your body stops feeling like yours

Weight in places it never went before. Hair in the drain. Acne at 44. You stop wearing half your closet — the same cardigan, four days running.

Your work gets quietly harder

You lose a word mid-sentence. Read the same line three times. You start wondering, privately, if this is something worse. It isn't — it's hormonal, and almost nobody says so out loud.

Then your self-talk turns

By month 8 I stopped blaming hormones and started blaming myself. Lazy. Undisciplined. That belief cost me a year.

EW

I spent $600 that year — a trainer, two apps, a meal plan, a supplement from Facebook. All aimed at the wrong thing, because I didn't know which hormone I was fighting.

What changed, in 6 weeks

At 45 I stopped chasing the weight and started tracking the pattern — food, sleep, cycle, mood, on paper, daily.

Six weeks in, something invisible for two years became obvious: my worst days always followed two nights of broken sleep. Not willpower. Cortisol.

Sleep came back first. Then my evenings. Then my house got quieter. Then the 11pm eating stopped on its own. Weight came back last — and slowest.

I didn't get my body back first. I got my evenings back. Everything else followed.

That was my result, with my mix of PCOS and perimenopause. Not a promise about yours. What transfers is the method, not the number.

5 reasons I wrote it all down

1. Stop blaming your character for a hormone problem

Cortisol on the sleepless nights. Insulin on the 4pm crashes. Naming it ends the argument you have with yourself every morning.

2. Something to hand your husband — or your sister

My husband read mine in one evening. He stopped taking bad Thursdays personally. The house got quieter in two weeks.

3. So "your bloodwork is normal" stops ending the conversation

Hormones swing week to week — one test on the wrong day misses everything. A 6-week pattern doesn't.

4. Get your evenings back first

Protect sleep and the rest follows — less snapping, less 11pm eating, more left for the people in your house.

5. Stop paying to guess

$600 bought me a trainer and a supplement. Six weeks of writing it down told me more, for free.

Questions I get asked

PCOS and perimenopause — which guide?

Both — that's why it's a bundle. The two run on separate hormone chains that stack on each other.

Is this medical advice?

No. I'm not a doctor. This is what I worked out for myself, with clear flags for when to see one.

Is this another diet?

No meal plan, no calorie count. Just what your hormones are doing, and a tracker to find your pattern.

How long before I see anything?

About 6 weeks for the pattern to show. Sleep usually shifts first, weight last.

What exactly do I get?

4 files, one $27 payment, emailed instantly. No subscription, no upsells after.

If you recognise the parking lot

The one you sit in after being told everything is normal.

You're not lazy. You didn't lose your willpower at 44. You're working from the wrong information — and that's fixable.
